Hemorrhoid Banding

What is Hemorrhoid Banding?

Hemorrhoid banding, which is also called hemorrhoid ligation, is a painless, minimally invasive procedure to treat hemorrhoids. The doctor places a small rubber band around the base of a hemorrhoid to cut off its circulation. This causes the hemorrhoid to shrink and fall off, usually within a week. As the hemorrhoid shrinks, so does its painful symptoms.

How Should I Prepare for the Procedure and What Can I Expect?

Before a hemorrhoid band ligation (HBL), we’ll determine your hemorrhoid grade using the Goliger system which classifies hemorrhoids I II III and IV based upon level of protrusion, prolapse, level of strain, and related risk for strangulation and thrombosis. Depending upon your circumstance, we’ll provide you with specific dietary instructions and or any temporary adjustments to your medication regimen before the procedure. If you have grade IV hemorrhoid, surgery will be required.

When you arrive to Digestive Health Associates of Cheyenne for your procedure we’ll begin by asking you to change into a gown, lie on your side, and your doctor will guide an anoscope into the anus. The instrument grasps the hemorrhoid and a device places a rubber band around its base. If the discomfort is too great, numbing medication may be injected to help manage the pain.

Hemorrhoid banding treatments are limited to 1-2 hemorrhoids per session. Following the procedure, you may feel pain in the treated area for 24-48 hours, experience discomfort or fullness in the lower abdomen, or have the urge to pass gas or bowl movement. Light bleeding 7-10 days after the procedure is common and gradually stops. Many patients resume normal activities immediately after the procedure whereas others require a few days to recover. We recommend you take stool softener and drink ample amounts of fluids to ensure smooth bowel movement and little strain.

Your doctor will follow up with you to discuss your results and determine if additional procedures are required.

Hemorrhoids are nothing to be embarrassed about – in fact, about 50% of the population will suffer from them by the age of 50.

If you’re serious about getting rid of hemorrhoids once and for all, it’s time to consider a definitive treatment.

The CRH O’Regan System®

The CRH O’Regan System® offers a painless, proven effective solution to the problems associated with hemorrhoids through a unique take on hemorrhoid banding.

Hemorrhoid banding with the CRH O’Regan System® is a simple treatment that the doctor performs in just minutes with little to no discomfort. It requires no prep or sedation, and most patients are even able to return to work the same day.

How it Works

The doctor uses gentle suction to grasp the hemorrhoid and then place a small rubber band at the base of it in an area where there aren’t any nerve endings. This only takes about 60 seconds. After a few days, the hemorrhoid will begin to shrink and fall off – you probably won’t even notice when it does!
