What is H. pylori?
H. pylori (Helicobacter pylori) is a bacterial infection in the stomach lining. Many people contract it during childhood and never know they have it. In some people (about 10% of people with the infection), the infection damages the lining of the stomach and small intestine, which can lead to peptic ulcers. The infection can also cause inflammation in the stomach lining (gastritis). Having an H. pylori infection is also a strong risk factor for stomach cancer. While the direct cause of the infection is unknown, evidence shows it can be spread through contaminated food or water sources, through saliva or fecal matter, and/or from person to person.
